Three Spies

AP Govt
Let's see - after today's THINK, we went through yesterday's newspaper story about MN being in a recession. This was followed by some work in the JA Study Guide. Tomorrow will be about grades and some study tips for the final. People have asked me for study guides - there really aren't any and the best thing I can recommend are the notes some of you have taken and shared throughout the course. Ask to see one another's notebooks. Make copies. Study.

AP WS
We watched a video about Africa: A History Denied. I interjected at times to share some extra tidbits. I hope you learned something.

WS 5 & 6
You were given some time to finish the homework that is due tomorrow. I am also giving you the opportunity to turn in a castle on Tuesday for half credit.

Web of Wow

As many of you know, I frequently share interesting bits from the web in class. I have some favorite sites (break.com), but most of what I learn about comes from random surfing and well-travelled faves that have links to what they enjoy. I recently became of this site from Mark Evanier, a writer in LA. It is amazing - think Rube Goldberg.

A Safe Place

AP Govt
We completed and discussed the JA Study Guide pages related to Demand. I hope you continue to try so you learn about econ - it is seriously important. Tomorrow will be about supply and we'll read about the potential recession Minnesota is currently facing.

AP WS
Sgt. Noble visited and was about to cuff Maly - quite humorous for everyone. After that, we used the time to complete the maps for Africa and the Americas. Tomorrow we'll watch something about Africa.

WS 5&6
You worked on the America map in class, and many of you did not finish the Africa map (too much chit chat?).

Haircut and a Shave

AP Government
We covered the Barber logic question while also presenting Price Elasticity of Demand. Tomorrow will hopefully find us completing some Demand problems. Do not forget about the semester final!


World Studies (AP and 5/6)
We went over the Barber Logic question, followed by a lecture on Aztec sacrifice. The daily question was: Where do Monarch Butterflies come from? It was answered through a scientific, geographic, and mythological lens. I hope everyone remembers who my favorite Aztec god is.

3 Monkeys

I will update this thing every day (perhaps even after every course). I promise to do my best. It was shut down last year due to MPS filtering software. This will be more useful over time as assignments are given and advance-notice of tests written.

Until then, maybe use the comments section to give some tips on fun web sites and/or interesting vids on break.com

Meteorology vs....

Astrology. They're both kind of the same, aren't they? It is now 7:30 pm and it has just begun to snow. Will it continue? HOw much will fall before 6:00 am tomorrow? Will school be closed? Um, yeah. We all know the answer to that. Let's see here - it's going to dump a lot of snow on the ground, creating some unsafe driving (and walking) conditions. Let's put a bunch of little kids on big buses and a lot of teens behind the wheels of their own cruddy vehicles. That's safe. To read the official policy, go here.

Govt/Econ: Bring your bright yellow budget sheets to class next time. We'll continue the budget-school choice/reparations discussions.

WS: Finish your maps!

AP: Prepare for the Ch. 12 and CH. 13 tests (more like quizzes) that you must prepare for on your own! I also handed out the CH. 14 wksht. Get it done by, oh, let's say...Wednesday. HOWEVER - I will give you some class time to get some stuff done (including some more maps - Americas and Africa this time. While some of you will use the time to do your maps - others may use their time to coordinate History Day preparation/completion (for Percy). Do not waste this final weekend! Boards/Displays will take a lot longer than you believe.

To all - If I have to go to school tomorrow, I expect everyone there to suffer with me! If, by some miracle of all miracles, school is closed, Enjoy a free day, but then make sure you complete your classwork and don't come back to class behind the eight ball. EC - what's the origin of that last phrase? Include your findings in your notebooks.

Ooh - last bit. Remind me to distirbute a reading about the story behind the new movie, "300." Adios...

Not much has happened, or so it seems.

Govt/Econ: 2nd period had a great conversation with Dr. Green (MPS Superintendent) about the district budget. 4th period is preparing for the Reparations discussion.

WS: Maps. Maps. MOre maps.

AP: Many were gone to WIlson today. We also had speakers on MOnday. SO, that means everyone is ready for Wednesday's test, right? Chapters 8,9,10, & 11. You will be allowed to use your notebooks.

A trailer for the new Resident Evil: Extinction movie is available. It stars that "actress" from the Joan of Arc biopic clips we watched.

Govt/Econ: We have begun our study of reparations and what the government is responsible for regarding helping people.

Saying, Doing, and Causing Headaches.

Different types of quotes for awhile. The AP classes have been split into gender-specific groups. I hope everyone realizes the opportunity presented should not be wasted. It should force you to consider different viewpoints since the "other" gender is missing and not available for comment. A valuable lesson: Just because people (and their viewpoints) cannot be seen, their opinions should be heard and/or considered.

Govt/Econ: Tests on Chapter 16 (Taxes)

WS: Joan of Arc and Messenger clips.

AP: Same as WS, but I also gave you homework. We'll discuss the Magna Carta and Black Death numbers on Wednesday. There will be a biography on JOan of Arc on Tuesday. Discussion about the lady will be taking place on Weds/Thurs.

Do not forget about the castle due next Tuesday...no late projects will be accepted. Turn it in by Friday for EC.

*COUGH* *COUGH*

Interesting surprise awaited my AP group this afternoon. I hope everyone realizes the importance of reading relevant chapters, paying attention in class, doing requisite work, and studying.

Ye of Little Faith

We will have a quiz on chapters 9 & 10 tomorrow (Thursday). Be prepared! I hope you took good notes today - they'll help for your quiz and test. That is all.

In the Name of the Father

We looked at the Crusades today. I hope at least a few of you appreciated (and learned from) the video today. It presents information in a more dramatic manner, utilizing the news story method. These 30-minute videos may seem cheesy, but they're chock full of goodness.

Since it looks like only my AP group looks at this site (if anyone does), I'm going to limit my posts to be AP-centric. I'll prossibly lecture on Wednesday, and you'll definitely take a quiz on Thursday or Friday (chapters 9 & 10).

Govt/Econ: More Taxes for the next 2 days.
WS 10: You'll watch the Crusades video on Wednesday, followed by a map on Thursday.

Extra Credit opportunity for any and all: Go to the Black & White dance (I'll get a copy of the ticket list).

Oh - Spain group: I know you question the value of the meetings, but trust me when I say you will appreciate them in time. You'll be spending a lot of time with one another and have only each other to lean on when away from your family in a distant, foreign locale. And learn the phrases - preparedness is key! I would also like a couple of people to serve as tour guides for Toledo, Sevilla, and Madrid. What should we go see? What should we avoid? I'm interested in seeing a soccer match (if I can figure out when/where) - it would be a minor league game since all 1st Division matches are on Sundays only. I'm also interested in a bullfight if they are in season...anyone else? Just to let you know - I plan on seeing a movie or two as well. I think it will be fun to catch a flick in a Spanish cinema (perhaps Pan's Labyrinth or Volver - if they're still out). And since we'll be on the coast - perhaps I should dig out my speedo...

Cheat me...

A day after the Super Bowl, we continue to freeze. Tomorrow will be interesting (as will Thursday) due to MBST Math and Reading exams. I hope people appreciated the auditorium this morning - the Heifer Foundation seems very interesting and worthwhile.

Gov't/Econ: Taxes. We'll fill out actual tax forms on Wednesday.

WS: We read about a Muslim's viewpoint of a Frankish crusader. Students were to get the other reading done on their own.

AP: We read the same as WS, in addition to the Position of the JEws in Germany, followed by your attempt to complete the map. I assigned 10.2 and 10.4 to be done by Friday. Look for a quiz on Thursday.

"They Say"

The biggest liar in the land. Verify everything with a secured, trusted source. I hope the daily quote has been making you think - even if for only a minute. At the end of the week, I will be asking that you pick your favorite of that week's three quotes. I encourage you to share them with your family and ask about their opinions when/if applicable.

In Govt/Econ today, we had an interesting task and result in 2nd period. Both classes had some time to finish up the work we will be correcting in class tomorrow.

WS: Some class time to finish your maps and vocabulary.

AP WS: A little castle lecture, followed up by some info about knights. Then you had time to finish up your maps. We'll correct some work tomorrow. I'll present some more castle information, and officially assign you some reading: Chapters 9 & 10. Expect a quiz next week.

What a Waste

A new page every day. Tree-killer. It may seem like a waste to some or many of you, but we are developing some organizational skills. A basic rule to live by is to begin with a new page (side) every day. If you get a handout, plan for its inclusion somehwere - if you want to staple/tape it to a page you are also writing on....fine, but then you are actually hiding information. Every page will either be a continuation of a previous page or the beginning of something new. Something new will always start on a new page, with a clear page title. Trust me - it will help you keep track of everything.

AS (& AP): Whenever there is some down time, finish up your maps. Tomorrow, I'll give a real Castle/Middle Ages lecture. Thursday is still TBD. Friday will be a day to correct your homework, and we'll read some other primary documents.

G/E: I'll be assigning a book later this week. In class, it's about breaking bad habits and getting you to focus on not wasting time by getting your work done...in class. Textbooks are due by Friday.

Podcasting!

OK - I have started reading the textbook in order to create podcasts. My next step will be to record lectures. Here is an extra-credit assignment for my fellow nerdy types - I need to know how to get server space (maybe at WHS?) and then upload my podcasts so you can easily download them when you want to transfer them to your MP3 player. I am also serious about getting other readers out there. Each section is taking about 15 minutes, totalling about an hour for each chapter. Any interested takers? If you have a computer or Digital Voice Recorder, you should be good to go. I'll worry about converting files - I just need people to create them by CLEARLY reading from the text! Any takers?
